Aired in 1980 on RTV, the classic wuxia period series Tai Chi Master dramatizes the legend of Zhang Sanfeng, the believed originator of Tai Chi. Set in the turmoil of the late Yuan Dynasy, the drama stars Alex Man, in one of his early representative roles, as the hero who starts out as a Shaolin monk trained in martial arts. Heeding the advice of an elder monk (Walter Cho), Zhang leaves the monastery and returns to the earthly world where he befriends Chang Yuchun (Lau Kwok Shing). He also becomes a disciple of Tao (Ng Wui) and falls in love with Tao's daughter Caiyi (Michelle Yim) which leads to trouble with a vengeful prince (Yeung Chak Lam) who holds a torch for Caiyi. Their lives are upturned when Caiyi's true identity is revealed, throwing them into further danger. Meanwhile, Chang joins with Zhu Yuanzhang (Law Lok Lam) in preparation for insurgency against the Yuan emperor who orders a massacre to quell the rebellion. Forced to fight back in these tumultuous times, Zhang comes to understand and develop the tenets of Tai Chi.
